Innovation Campus boosts Virtual Production Community
Chatsworth, CA (March 5, 2021) – NantStudios, a state-of-the-art virtual production service provider, has launched its revolutionary virtual production ecosystem and innovation campus in El Segundo, California. ROE Visual LED products are part of the studios offering.
NantStudios' state-of-the-art ICVFX sound stage was designed and innovated in collaboration with Lux Machina. The company has been on the leading edge of designing and implementing ICVFX stages. NantStudios makes it possible to conceptualize, iterate and execute final visual effects shots in-camera, concurrently with live-action capture.
“Our new Virtual Production innovation campus represents a fusion of premiere broadcast media technology, bleeding edge real-time rendering software, and a deeply experienced technical team to forge that combination into the industry-leading provider of in-camera visual effects and associated services. We are proud to work with ROE Visual on bringing this next-generation of storytelling tools online” said Gary Marshall, Director of Virtual Production, NantStudios.
NantStudios boasts a full-service production ecosystem comprised of traditional, broadcast, and virtual production stages. The company is based in Los Angeles with campuses in Culver City and El Segundo. An expert team services the company's virtual production stages with decades of virtual production, visual effects, and engineering experience. NantStudios' goal is to democratize the virtual production workflow and make it accessible to any scale project while innovating with R&D in technologies to streamline the process.
NantStudios' services team, led by Gary Marshall, Director of Virtual Production, and Keaton Heinrichs, Director of Studio Operations and Business Development, have decades of experience, performing critical roles on such revolutionary productions as "The Lord of the Rings," "Avatar," "Gravity," "The Lion King" and "The Mandalorian."
Phil Galler, CEO at Lux Machina, states: "About six months in the making, from custom steel and safety equipment to a unique 360-degree LED design meant to improve audio, create immersive wrap-around shot capabilities, and provide a flexible operation space for any product type. The facility is fully capable of multi-frustum, HDR, live broadcast, and feature film level production controlled by a flexible and Covid Safe "brain bar" design, allowing operators and creators to work from any position on stage.
The campus and studio have been designed to work directly with productions of all types, from high-end feature films to independent video projects. Epic Games has co-located its newest Los Angeles Lab at NantStudios. Bringing together an impressive new space and assembly of talent in this innovation lab, NantStudios aims to set the new standard for ICVFX stages and services.
"We are excited to expand our Los Angeles presence at the NantStudios campus, a hub for the virtual production community and an incredible new stage-for-hire which has been in high demand. This is a space where the Unreal Engine team will not only accelerate testing of new virtual production workflows and cutting-edge developments, it also offers the opportunity to go into production on real-world projects," said Marc Petit, General Manager Unreal Engine, Epic Games. "NantStudios is a nimble, flexible, and resourceful company and, much like Epic, shares a commitment to innovation across a diverse range of industries."
The NantStudios stage features industry-leading ROE Visual LED panels and Brompton processors integrated into a novel modular-designed volume video system. The volume can be configured for real-time camera-tracked Unreal Engine environments, pre-rendered plate playback, or a hybrid approach. Live composite feeds, and volume spy-cams can be streamed to any remote location on NantStudios' accelerated fiber network infrastructure. The resulting photo-realistic, immersive virtual environments are suited for use in film and television.
Lux Machina advised using the ROE Visual Black Pearl BP2 LED panels for the LED volume, which have featured on the Mandalorian set earlier. Combined with a ceiling of Carbon CB3 LED panels, this is a proven and ideal set-up.
"Lux Machina and ROE Visual have worked closely on several ground-breaking virtual production projects, and our cooperation reaches further than just supplying LED panels. To achieve good results, close collaboration and in-depth knowledge of the products are required. Together with Lux Machina, we have gone through some pervasive testing, comments Frank Montero, General Manager for ROE Visual US.
The NantStudios ICVFX sound stage and innovation campus are ready to take on outside productions.
